Gilmer High School is back in the state basketball tournament. The GHS Bobcats entered last week’s Region 7-3A tournament seeded No. 5. However, Gilmer battled its way to the title game by downing West Hall (55-44) and top seeded Wesleyan in the semifinals, 68-47.

The Gilmer High Lady Cats wrapped up their basketball season at the annual region tournament. The Cats were at Wesleyan last Monday to take on the No. 7 ranked White County Warriors.

Gilmer High baseball enters the 2023 season with a revamped lineup. GHS graduated important pieces to its infield, outfield and pitching staff from last year’s 10-win team, and head coach Jeff Thurman and staff have embarked on this season with a 23-man roster that includes eight upperclassmen.

12 GHS wrestlers qualify for state

Gilmer High will send 12 total wrestlers to this week’s traditional state tournament. GHS boys and girls were both at Upson Lee High School last week for sectionals. The girls were up first, and five placed in the top six to qualify for state, which included champion Taylor Schiesser.

Five Gilmer High basketball players have been recognized by the region. All-Region 7-3A honor rolls were released last week. Bobcat sophomore Jackson McVey was voted to the first team while junior Ryder Wofford landed on the all-region second team.

The Gilmer Bobcats went out in style to end the regular season. GHS hosted West Hall for senior night last Tuesday. The closely-played game came down to the final second, and Bobcat Ryder Wofford was there to send the Spartans reeling.

The Gilmer Lady Cats ended the regular season with a lopsided victory. West Hall was in town last Tuesday, and the woeful Spartans were on the wrong end of a 52-point wallop. The Cats led throughout, and the outcome was never in doubt as they strolled to a 59-7 win.

Gilmer High opened its soccer season with four wins. The GHS Bobcats and Lady Cats hosted Fannin County last Tuesday, and the Rebels were saddled with a pair of losses. Following the Lady Cats’ 2-0 shutout victory, the Bobcats won, 4-2.
Gilmer High School celebrated its 19th consecutive traditional area championship last Saturday. Twelve Bobcats placed in the top four of their weight class to advance to this week’s sectional tournament.

Gilmer High School has extended its local area wrestling dominance to 19 years. GHS hosted the Area 7-3A traditional tournament last Saturday, and the Bobcats were the top team once again.

Kiker voted football all-state by GACA

Will Kiker has been voted to the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association’s Class 3A All-State football team. Kiker was a valuable asset for Gilmer High on the gridiron, and his latest honor comes after he was voted Region 7-3A’s athlete of the year for the 2022 football season back in December.
