Gilmer soccer starts strong

Gilmer High opened its soccer season with four wins. The GHS Bobcats and Lady Cats hosted Fannin County last Tuesday, and the Rebels were saddled with a pair of losses. Following the Lady Cats’ 2-0 shutout victory, the Bobcats won, 4-2.
Gilmer High School celebrated its 19th consecutive traditional area championship last Saturday. Twelve Bobcats placed in the top four of their weight class to advance to this week’s sectional tournament.

Gilmer High School has extended its local area wrestling dominance to 19 years. GHS hosted the Area 7-3A traditional tournament last Saturday, and the Bobcats were the top team once again.

Kiker voted football all-state by GACA

Will Kiker has been voted to the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association’s Class 3A All-State football team. Kiker was a valuable asset for Gilmer High on the gridiron, and his latest honor comes after he was voted Region 7-3A’s athlete of the year for the 2022 football season back in December.
Gilmer High School competed in the first-ever girls traditional area tournament last Friday and came away with the team championship. GHS had three individual champions and qualified eight wrestlers for this week’s sectional tournament.

Gilmer High’s successful wrestling week began with a girls area title. GHS was one of 25 teams at last Friday’s Area 7 traditional tournament at Alexander High.

The Gilmer High Bobcats won two more basketball games and have now been victorious in seven out of the last eight times they have taken the court. GHS hosted White County last Tuesday and rocked the short-handed Warriors, 79-50.

For the second week in a row, the Gilmer  High Lady Cats picked up a nonregion basketball victory. GHS was at Southeast Whitfield Saturday for a rematch from a week earlier. Their second meeting also ended with Gilmer ahead on the scoreboard, and this time the Cats won, 43-29.
Joining Gilmer High coaches Paige Johnstone and Alton Guidry are state qualifying swimmers Jacob Kucera, Cheyne Smith, Ian Berry, Law Lykins and Larz Fowler.

Another season is in the books for Gilmer High swimmers. Gilmer attended last week’s GHSA State Championships at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center and advanced to the finals in four events. At a state, teams from Class 1A through 3A compete against each other.

The Gilmer High Lady Cats were back on the basketball court for three games and notched a noneregion win. The Cats welcomed Southeast Whitfield to the GHS gym last Saturday, and an explosive second half allowed Gilmer to blast the Raiders for a 63-20 victory.

The state’s wrestlers took the mat for a final event ahead of traditional area tournaments. Gilmer High made its way to Pickens last Friday and Saturday for the Burnt Mountain Classic. For the Bobcats, the tournament gave them a chance to recover as the final stretch of the season approaches.
