Coach Rodney Walker passes at 79

Georgia high school football coaching legend Rodney Walker passed away at the age of 79 on May 9 in Atlanta. He was the head coach at 10 schools over a 40-year span, and his third gig was at GHS from 1975-78. In the four years prior to his arrival, the Bobcats won just two games each season.

GHS youth summer camps underway

Summer vacation has arrived for the county’s students, and Gilmer High School began its annual slate of youth sports camps this week with football, soccer and girls basketball.Cheerleading camp will be June 8-11 at the Clear Creek Middle School gym from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.

GHS golfers place 11th in state

The Gilmer Bobcats secured their spot as one of the upper-echelon golf teams in Class 3A.GHS made its way to Highland Country Club last Wednesday and Thursday for the 36-hole state event.

Bainbridge survives GHS Bobcats

The Gilmer Bobcats battled until the very end of their state soccer playoff match.GHS was in Bainbridge (17-1 record) for the opening round of the Class 3A tournament April 22. The No. 29 seeded Cats took on the No. 4 Bearcats, and the home team needed a penalty shootout to secure its victory.

Gilmer High track primed for state meet

Three Gilmer High track and field athletes have punched their ticket to the state meet.GHS was in Jefferson last Saturday for sectionals. Lady Cat Lilyan Cook turned in Gilmer’s best performance on the day with her second-place throw in the discus (120’ 3”).
