Macy Hamby is one of several Ellijay natives competing at the Division I level, and she just wrapped up her junior season.Hamby is a 2023 Gilmer High graduate and attends Appalachian State University where she plays softball for the Mountaineers.

Robert Pim will keep his football career going at Shorter University.Pim is a 2026 Gilmer High graduate and helped lead the Bobcats to consecutive state playoff berths as an upperclassman. Shorter is located in Rome, and Pim also received a scholarship offer from Huntington University in Indiana.

Local sports radio is back on the scene in Ellijay.Broadcasting veteran Dave Garner and Ellijay’s John “The Refrigerator Mover” Davis have teamed up for a show three days per week, and it is available through just about every device that produces sound.Garner is currently the sports director at 101.

Rodney Walker left a trail of memories for his former players and assistants over a career that spanned 40 years.Walker passed away May 9 at the age of 79. His wife of 58 years, Adecia, was joined by hundreds in attendance who paid their final respects in Fairburn seven days later.

Gilmer High School's youth sports camps continue this week with softball, wrestling and baseball.The Homegrown Youth Wrestling Camp will be June 18-19 at the Noah Harris Wrestling Center from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and is open to wrestlers in high school and middle school.
