Gilmer set for Friday scrimmage

With the sun beaming down and classic rock blaring over a loudspeaker, the Gilmer Bobcats donned full pads for the first time this summer. The Bobcats toiled in the sun throughout June and July, and they are set to scrimmage Class 5A Sequoyah Friday.

Schiesser’s wrestling career goes next level

All-American Taylor Schiesser is set to continue her wrestling career in the college ranks.  She is a 2024 Gilmer High honor graduate and the most decorated wrestler in the brief history of the girls program.

Kucera set for college swimming, academics

Jacob Kucera is Gilmer High’s latest college bound swimmer. While the swim program is still in its infancy compared to those that have been around for decades, and hurdles along the way have staggered participation, it continues to have swimmers advance to the college ranks.

Twenty-six Gilmer swimmers qualify for state meet

The Georgia Recreation and Park Association’s swim season is set for its finale. Districts from around the state will gather in Baxley Saturday to decide who is No. 1. The Gilmer Swim Team will be in attendance, and 26 combined Bobcats and Lady Cats will make the trip across five age groups.

Gilmer Bobcats revamp summer wrestling routine

Summer is a vital time for athletic programs, and those at Gilmer High continue to make the best use if it. One of the programs that takes advantage of the offseason is GHS wrestling. The Bobcats have a rich winning heritage of 19 team state championships, but even the best make changes.

State meet up next for the county’s youth swimmers

The state meet is up next for Gilmer swimmers. The Pickens Sea Dragons joined the Bobcats and Lady Cats at the Gilmer County pool June 24 for the Georgia Park and Recreation Association’s District 5 meet. With only two teams in attendance, both secured dozens of spots for state.

Berry stays close to home at Reinhardt

Bregan Berry helped Gilmer High wrestling win a pair of team state titles and ended his Bobcat career with one of his own. Berry will stay close to home over the next several years when he takes the mat for the Reinhardt University Eagles.

Gilmer takes third in summer league meet

Gilmer swimmers were back at their home away from home. The Cherokee Aquatic Center played host to the Cherokee Summer League Championship last Thursday. The Cartersville Cobias and Pickens Sea Dragons joined Gilmer and the host Pelicans for the meet.
