GHS Bobcats drop opening region series

Gilmer High opened its region baseball schedule and found itself on the losing end. The GHS Bobcats squared off against Heritage last week, and the Generals hosted game one Wednesday. Both teams battled the cold temperatures, and the Generals persevered, 12-0.

Gilmer youth wrestlers shine at state tourneys

Local youth wrestlers wrapped up state tournaments and were well represented on the medal stand. The first USA Wrestling titles were decided Feb. 22 at the Georgia Kids State Championships and Beginner’s Bash in Perry.

GHS Cats tame RHS Panthers

Gilmer High met rival Fannin County for a nonregion tennis tangle. Alex Miltiades GHS made the trip to Blue Ridge last Monday, and the Lady Cats and Bobcats both fell, 4-1. The No. 1 Bobcat doubles team of Aiden McCart and Charles Addie came out on top 8-4 for the only win of the day. The No.

Gilmer defeats Rebels, region schedule begins

Gilmer High faced its Hwy. 515 rivals on the baseball diamond. The GHS Bobcats were at Pickens last Monday to continue their nonregion schedule, and the Dragons only needed five innings for a 10-0 win.

GHS soccer blasts Dawson County, 9-1

The Gilmer High Bobcats demolished Dawson County for their fifth soccer victory of the season. GHS welcomed the Tigers to Huff-Mosley Memorial Stadium last Friday, and the nonregion tilt was a one-sided affair from the start.

Taylor, Bryant voted all-region

Gilmer High’s 1,000-point duo of J.D. Taylor and Keegen Bryant were selected as two of the best Region 7-3A basketball players. All-region squads were announced last month, and they were two of 15 players selected.

Gilmer High School freshman Madden Hopkins is a wrestling state champion. While the high school season is over, USA Wrestling has taken center stage. Hopkins attended USAW’s Freshman State Tournament Feb. 23 as a member of the Bobcat Wrestling Club.

GHS Lady Cat tennis tops Fannin Rebels

Gilmer High was on the tennis court for region and nonregion matches through the early season. The GHS Bobcats and Lady Cats played four matches last week, and the latter earned one win. The Lady Cats’ triumph came Friday at home against Fannin County.
The 10-under Gilmer Bobcats won their third straight District 7 basketball title last week with tournament victories  over Oglethorpe (35-21), Fannin County (37-24), Commerce (43-30) and Lumpkin County (34-11). The state tournament is up next, and the Bobcats are looking to bring home the championship after placing second and third the past two seasons.

GHS track kicks off season in Gainesville

Gilmer High was off and running in Gainesville to begin the track and field season. The Bobcats and the Lady Cats combined to score points on 26 occasions, which included four first-place finishes.  GHS shined in the shot and took first in the boys and girls divisions.
