The Gilmer High Bobcats earned two more region soccer wins and outscored opponents 12-0 in the process.
GHS hosted Adairsville last Tuesday and smashed the Tigers, 5-0. It only got worse for Ridgeland Friday as the hometown Panthers never stood a chance in a 7-0 defeat.
“The boys have been playing well overall,” head coach Taylor Johnstone said of the Bobcats, who have a 9-2 overall record. “I am currently the most happy with the consistency in our program. Our team’s school attendance has been great, and the athletes’ grades are reflecting this. This consistency has carried over to the field.
“Our averages in some of our key focus areas over the past three games have been some of the best this year. Possession is at 55 percent and successful pass percentage is 73. We’ve scored 4.3 and goals over that span and haven’t conceded any. If we can continue to improve on these stats on and off the field, I believe we will continue to have a successful season.”
GHS held possession for 60 percent of the Adairsville match and offered a never-ending barrage of shots with 31. AHS got off 13 shots, three were saved, three more were deflected and the remaining were off target.
Keby Puac scored Gilmer’s opening goal after 14 minutes of play, and the score remained 1-0 at the half. Over the final 40 minutes, Jorge Flores added two goals while Brayner Ortiz and Liam Engel scored one apiece.
At Ridgeland, the Panthers’ nightmare started immediately. GHS scored all seven goals in the first half, and Engel was there for three. Flores and Ortiz netted a goal as well and Bobcat goalkeeper Talyn Curtis hammered home a penalty kick.
The second half as shortened to 20 minutes with the mercy rule in effect.
GHS is 3-1 in region play and hosted Northwest Whitfield (9-1 overall) Tuesday evening.
“Northwest is a very strong team and have had a tremendous season up to this point,” Johnstone said. “They’ve scored a lot of points (40) and their defense is strong only allowing four goals this season. I believe our boys will be ready to compete. Hopefully the ball will bounce our way a few times.”
GHS will wrap up its region schedule Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at LaFayette.
