The Gilmer High Lady Cats obliterated the Ridgeland Panthers.
GHS was in Ridgeland Friday for the region match to end last week. Senior forward Yenifer Lopez continued to live up to her goal-scoring reputation and put the ball in the back of the net eight times. The match was called in the second half because of goal differential as the Cats won handily, 11-1.
The Cats were at home three days prior and hosted Adairsville. The Tigers took a one-goal lead into the break and added three more in the second half for a 4-0 victory.
“Ridgeland was a must-win game. I’m proud of the team in that regard. Now we are focused on the remainder of the season, one game at a time,” said head coach Adam Palmer. “We have to improve our defensive wing play.”
RHS scored its goal in the first half while the Cats netted four. Gilmer’s seventh goal of the second half brought a premature ending to the game because of the 10-goal mercy rule. In addition to Lopez, freshman Joei Marshall scored three goals.
The Lady Cats are 6-4 overall and second in the region with a 3-1 mark. Gilmer hosted first place Northwest Whitfield (7-2 overall) Tuesday evening. GHS wraps up its region schedule Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at LaFayette.
