Gilmer, Pickens split rivalry softball series

Gilmer and Pickens met last week on the softball field under different circumstances. While the rivalry still thrives, the GHS Lady Cats and Dragonettes are no longer region opponents after the former dropped down to Class 3A.

Gilmer High School cross-country will have to be at its best to keep its postseason streaks alive. A drop to Class 3A brings a new region and its members are no strangers to success.

Gilmer wins two volleyball matches in first week

Gilmer High began its volleyball season last week with three matches.  The Cats were in Blue Ridge Wednesday to take on Fannin County and handed the Rebels a 3-0 defeat. Gilmer made the trip to Christian Heritage the following day to face the host Lions and Heritage Generals.

Gilmer High runs at inaugural Pickens Peek

GHS began the season last Saturday at the Pickens Peek in Jasper. The meet is typically called the Pickens Preview and hosts over 30 teams. This season the name was changed and the field was reduced to eight because of COVID-19 (coronavirus) precautions.

Gilmer softball aims for a return to state tourney

Gilmer High School softball’s preseason had more than one twist and turn as the Lady Cats navigated their way. The COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic forced all teams to alter seasonal preparations to ensure they were creating the safest environment for players and coaches.

GHS Lady Cats take season opener, 3-2

The Gilmer High Lady Cats opened their softball season last Saturday with a 3-2 home victory over Sonoraville. Isabella Chastain earned the complete game victory and allowed just four hits, no earned runs and fanned seven Phoenix batters.

GHSA scraps preseason football scrimmages

The Georgia High School Association continues to make alterations to the football season amid the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic. The GHSA announced last week that member schools will no longer be permitted to participate in preseason scrimmages.

Saunders pleased with Bobcats’ progression so far

Georgia high school football teams were permitted to wear both shoulder pads and helmets at practice starting Aug. 1. The Bobcats were set to ramp up their practice routine Monday with the rest of the state before the threat of thunderstorms forced head coach Kevin Saunders to cancel.

All-American Waddell joins UTC Mocs

All-American and two-time wrestling state champion Caleb Waddell will make the short trip north to attend the University of Tennessee — Chattanooga. He is a 2020 Gilmer High School honor graduate and will wrestle for the Mocs alongside his best friend and brother, Matthew.
