Gilmer High volleyball downs Lumpkin, Murray

The Gilmer High volleyball team played three matches last week and two counted toward the region standings.

GHS was at home Monday versus Lumpkin County and won, 2-0. The Cats suffered a loss by the same score against White County the following day. Gilmer closed out its week Thursday at Murray County and defeated the Indians, 3-0.

The Cats topped Lumpkin 25-16 and 25-22 and had a solid defensive match with Hope Colwell accounting for 11 digs followed by Beth Burnette’s 10, while both Emma Callihan and Emma Deyton had seven apiece.

Emma Callihan and Burnette tallied 11 and eight assists, respectively, as Elly Callihan (nine kills) and Taylor McCormick (five) were there to score points.

Adrian Thompson led the way with two aces and both McCormick and Deyton scored one.

White County downed the Cats 25-20 and 26-28. Elly Callihan was the kill leader with eight, Emma Callihan had 12 assists and Colwell and Burnette turned in 11 and eight digs, respectively.

GHS and Murray used a best-of-five format and the Cats secured wins of 25-11, 25-21 and 25-22 for a nonregion victory. Gilmer  scored seven points from the service line, which included Thompson and Deyton (two aces each) as Emma Callihan, Burnette and Colwell all had one ace.

The Cats had a strong day at the net with 34 total kills. Elly Callihan was the top hitter once again with 14, as Deyton collected nine, Kadie Weaver and McCormick both had four and Burnette finished with three.

On the defensive side, Elly Callihan totaled two blocks as Weaver, McCormick and Burnette all had one.

Emma Callihan racked up 23 assists and 17 digs in the win. Burnette totaled 14 digs and Deyton had eight.

GHS is 12-6 overall and headed to Dawson at press deadline and will travel to North Murray Thursday for matches starting at 5 p.m.

The JV Cats fell to Lumpkin (25-11, 25-21, 25-22). They earned a first set win of 25-21 against  White  before dropping the next two sets, 25-20 and 25-22.
