Cats claw Christian Heritage Lions, 3-0

The Gilmer Lady Cats took on a trio of nonregion volleyball opponents last week.

GHS was at Chestatee Tuesday and lost to the War Eagles (2-1) and Jackson County Panthers (2-0). Gilmer was at home Thursday and notched a 3-0 victory over the Christian Heritage Lions.

After GHS won the first set versus Chestatee, 25-20, the War Eagles rebounded to take the next two and the match, 25-13 and 15-8.

Jackson defeated the Cats in straight sets, 25-18, 25-12.

“Jackson had a very well-rounded team. With all their experience, they bring to the court a team in which everyone of them can dig, set and hit the ball,” GHS coach Donna Parks said. “While we were able to get a dig on a lot of their hits, we just couldn’t seem to finish off the point.”

Statistics versus Chestatee: aces - Emma Deyton (four), Beth Burnette (two), Hope Colwell and Adrian Thompson (one each). Kills - Elly Callihan (eight), Taylor McCormick (four), Burnette, Kadie Weaver, Deyton and Emma Callihan (two each). Blocks - McCormick (two), Burnette and Elly Callihan (one each). 

Assists - Emma Callihan (13) and Burnette (five). Digs - Burnette (12), Colwell (10), Emma Callihan (eight), Deyton (seven), Thompson (five).

Statistical leaders against Jackson included Elly Callihan and McCormick with five and four kills, respectively. Emma Callihan had seven assists and digs were collected by Emma Callahan (seven), Burnette and Colwell (six each), Deyton and Elly Callihan (three each) and Thompson and Weaver (two apiece).

Christian Heritage fell to the Cats 25-20, 25-16 and 25-13. The Lions had difficulties handling the Cats’ serve, which yielded 13 points. Colwell had six aces and was followed by Deyton and Burnette with four and three, respectively.

Elly Callihan was the top hitter with 11 kills as Emma Callihan collected 13 assists and Burnette had 10. Colwell and Burnett both tailed 11 digs and Emma Callihan was there for eight.

Elly Callihan and McCormick both finished with two blocks and Weaver had one.

GHS is 10-5 overall and hosted White County at press deadline. Gilmer travels to Murray County Thursday with matches beginning at 6 p.m.
