John Gaines will make the short trek to Cleveland this fall to continue his athletic and academic exploits. The 2020 Gilmer High School graduate fielded three scholarship offers. Gaines selected Truett McConnell University over Brewton Parker University and the University of the Ozarks (Ark.

New weight room ready for June conditioning

Gilmer County athletes had a little more space to work with when summer conditioning began Monday. The former Gilmer High School Marching Band equipment room at the Larry Walker Education Center was renovated and converted into a weight room.

If not for the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic, Gilmer High School would be in the midst of its second week of spring football practice. Under normal circumstances, fans in purple and white would gather at Huff-Mosley Memorial Stadium Friday for the Bobcats’ annual scrimmage.

The Gilmer Cartecay Youth Mountain Bike Team has been busy planning to get more area kids and their parents on bikes. As the 2020 Georgia League Mountain Bike season approaches, returning and new riders alike are dreaming of getting back on the trail with their mountain bikes.

This week the Times-Courier will recognize Gilmer High golf senior Riley McCormick and tennis seniors Kaylee Becerra, Mason Hadden, Josie Reece, Sarah Sheahan and Luke Wimpey. The following information was submitted by senior athletes and photo collages were made by GHS.
Gilmer High sophomore Elly Callihan was selected to the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association’s Class 4A north all-state team and received an honorbale mention from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
