Gilmer High volleyball kicked off its area schedule last week. The Lady Cats traveled to Cherokee Bluff Tuesday to face the Bears and the Hart County Bulldogs. The Cats lost in two sets to Cherokee Bluff before defeating Hart, 2-0. The Bears reeled off wins of 25-15 and 25-17.

Gilmer High cross-country raced its way up the standings at last week’s Run the Hills meet in Blairsville. Bobcats John Keener and Michael Little climb one of the course’s hills. The GHS Bobcats and Lady Cats were one of six teams in their respective races.

Gilmer High returns an experienced football team that is bigger, stronger and faster than it was a year ago. The Bobcats won four games to end their losing streak and did so with plenty of first-year starters and underclassmen. Kevin Saunders enters his second season as Gilmer’s head coach.

Over the past two games, the Gilmer High School Lady Cats outscored region opponents, 31-0. In softball. There was no replay needed last Friday when GHS traveled to Cherokee Bluff High School and bombed the Bears in four innings, 12-0.

Gilmer High was in Jasper last Thursday for a pair of nonregion volleyball wins. The Lady Cats took out host and rival Pickens, as well as the Cass Colonels, 2-0. GHS controlled both matches and improved its seasonal record to 7-2.

The Gilmer High School Bobcats gave football fans a preview of what might be in store this season. GHS held a scrimmage last Friday, and players were split between offense and defense rather than divided into purple and white squads.

Before last Friday’s main event, the Clear Creek Middle School Bobcats took Petitt Field. The Gilmer County football program held intrasquad scrimmages at Huff-Mosley Memorial Stadium and fans got a glimpse of the future before Gilmer High gave them a view of the present.
Gilmer junior Taylor Elliott had four hits and drove in three runs in the Lady Cats’ 5-2 victory versus Lumpkin County.

The Gilmer Lady Cats picked up their first region softball win last week. GHS began its region schedule Tuesday at home and sent the Lumpkin County Indians back to Dahlonega with a 5-2 defeat.  Two days later, Gilmer made the long trip to Cherokee Bluff High School to face the Bears.

The Gilmer High Lady Cats were back on the volleyball court last week and played four matches. Gilmer played a tri-match at Sonoraville Tuesday and the host Phoenix won, 2-0. GHS also faced Oakwood and notched a victory by the same margin.
