GHS Lady Cats still perfect vs. region

The Gilmer High Lady Cats snagged two more region wins while dropping a pair of games at a Saturday tournament.

Last Monday, GHS notched a 7-0 region victory over the White County Warriors. Saturday took the Cats to Gwinnett County to face a pair of Class 7A schools.

The No. 8 ranked Lady Cats dropped their first game versus Collins Hill, 5-1. Gilmer was limited to one hit against Parkview in a 14-0 loss.

GHS resumed region play Monday at Dawson County and delivered a 8-1 defeat to the Tigers.

The game against White County was another sound defensive and offensive day for GHS.

The Cats had 13 hits, which were collected by eight different players. Gilmer committed one defensive error, and pitcher Isabella Chastain allowed just three hits while striking out 11 in seven innings of work.

Macy Hamby doubled home the game’s first run in the top of the third. In the fourth, Jasmine Staley doubled as well as two more Cats scored. In the fifth, back-to-back passed balls added two runs as GHS led, 5-0.

A two-out, two-run single by Jocelyn Birko in the seventh plated two more runs for Gilmer and White had no answer in its half of the inning.

Back-to-back doubles by Collins Hill in the third inning accounted for the first runs in the Cats’ opening game of the day.

The Eagles led 3-0 before Staley smacked a double to right. Briko scored on the play after doubling as well. Ahead 3-1, Collins Hill belted another two-run double in the seventh for the game’s final runs.

Staley and Birko both had two hits on the day.

Chastain started and lasted 4 1/3 innings. She fanned five batters, walked two and allowed three earned runs off three hits. Hamby entered the game in the fifth and tossed the final 2 2/3 innings. She gave up three hits as well, two earned runs and struck out two and walked one.

Parkview needed four innings to down the Cats. GHS errors accounted for three unearned runs, and the Panthers scored three in the first inning, five in the third and six more in the fourth.

Jacie Bennett accounted for the Cats’ only hit. Chastain pitched 2 1/3 innings and gave up three walks, five earned runs, four hits and struck out four. Hamby went 1 2/3 innings and allowed six earned runs, five hits, three walks and struck out one.

Against Dawson, Gilmer’s 10 hits were collected by the first five hitters in its lineup. Both Staley and Wright tallied three hits, Hamby had two and Taylor Elliott and Bennett recorded one each.

Freshman left-hander Zoey Woody pitched a complete game to claim the win. She limited the Tigers to five hits, struck out two and walked two.

Bennett’s hit came in the first when she sent the ball over the right field fence for a three-run homer.

A Birko sacrifice fly plated Gilmer’s next run in the third, and a Tiger error gave GHS a 5-0 lead in the fourth. The Cats were back at it in the sixth, and Wright singled home their sixth run.

An error allowed Gilmer to add a pair of insurance runs in the seventh.

Dawson scored its only run in the sixth inning and it was unearned.

GHS is 13-3 overall and hosted the Lumpkin County Indians at Tuesday’s press deadline. The Cats will make their way to Cherokee Bluff Thursday for a 6 p.m. game.
