GHS Lady Cats thump Trion Bulldogs, 8-0

Gilmer High continued its early-season nonregion soccer slate last week. The GHS Lady Cats were on the road for all three games, and the first was held Tuesday versus the Trion Bulldogs. Goals came in bunches for the Cats, and they trounced Trion, 8-0.

King reclaims throne

One of the most storied sports programs in Georgia has returned to its perch. The Gilmer High Bobcats won the Class 3A traditional state championship in Macon last Friday night, which is the school’s 18th wrestling state title.

GHS Bobcat basketball back in state tourney

For the first time since 2014, the Gilmer High Bobcats have qualified for the basketball state tournament. The Bobcats solidified their spot at home last Thursday. No. 3 seeded GHS met seventh seeded Lumpkin County in the second round.

Gilmer baseball returns 8 seniors

The Gilmer Bobcats  return to the baseball diamond this week looking to rebound from a five-win season in 2021. Head coach Jeff Thurman and staff put players through a month of preseason training ahead the season opener, and GHS returns much of its roster from a season ago.

Bears eliminate Cats

The Gilmer High Lady Cats entered last week’s region basketball tournament as the No. 7 seed. They took on the No. 6 seeded Cherokee Bluff Bears in round one, a team GHS lost to in the final game of the regular season. CBHS came out on top once again and did so this time by a 50-36 margin.

Nunn bids farewell after 27-year coaching career

GHS head basketball coach Susan Nunn is set to retire this spring after a 33-year teaching career. She spent 27 combined years coaching at the middle school and high school levels building relationships across a generation.

Gilmer soccer falls to Pickens

Gilmer High continued its soccer season last Friday versus archrival Pickens. The GHS Bobcats and Lady Cats made the short trip, and the hometown Dragons earned a pair of wins. In the girls match, Gilmer fell to the Dragonettes, 1-0.

Gilmer High tennis opens season vs. Fannin, Dalton

Gilmer and Fannin County tennis players braved the cold last Tuesday to begin the season. The GHS Lady Cats topped the host Rebels 4-1, and the Bobcats took their match, 3-2. Gilmer was in Dalton two days later for another chilly affair. The Lady Cats lost 4-1, and the Bobcats were swept.

Woodring collects two more state swim medals

Payton Woodring capped her high school swimming career with two more state medals. The state swim meet was held at Georgia Tech over a three-day span last week and concluded Saturday. Woodring finished second in the 100-yard backstroke finals and was third in the 100-yard butterfly.
