Gilmer High tennis opens season vs. Fannin, Dalton

Gilmer and Fannin County tennis players braved the cold last Tuesday to begin the season. The GHS Lady Cats topped the host Rebels 4-1, and the Bobcats took their match, 3-2. Gilmer was in Dalton two days later for another chilly affair. The Lady Cats lost 4-1, and the Bobcats were swept.
Gilmer High School senior swimmer Payton Woodring placed second in the 100-yard backstroke and third in the 100-yard butterfly at last week’s GHSA state championship meet.

Payton Woodring capped her high school swimming career with two more state medals. The state swim meet was held at Georgia Tech over a three-day span last week and concluded Saturday. Woodring finished second in the 100-yard backstroke finals and was third in the 100-yard butterfly.

Twelve Gilmer Bobcats are on their way to the traditional wrestling state tournament. GHS was in Lumpkin County last Friday and Saturday along with half of Class 3A’s teams for sectionals, and a top-six finish was needed to qualify for state.

The Gilmer Bobcats picked up one more region win last week ahead of this week’s tournament. After suffering lopsided losses to the North Hall Trojans and Cherokee Bluff Bears earlier this season, the Bobcats made much better showings this time around.

The Gilmer Lady Cats split with region opponents last week to finish seventh in the regular-season basketball standings. GHS hosted North Hall Tuesday and played its best game of the season.

Gilmer High School continued its wrestling dominance with an 18th straight traditional area championship. GHS hosted the five-team event Monday, and 12 Bobcats were crowned champions across 14 weight classes.
Gilmer freshman Jackson McVey (40) scored 14 points versus Dawson last week and netted 26 more three days later against East Forsyth. McVey also scored 28 points in Friday’s junior varsity game.

The Gilmer Bobcats maintained their third place spot in the standing with two region games remaining. The Bobcats secured a pair of region road victories last week over the Dawson County Tigers and East Forsyth Broncos.
Gilmer’s Brooke Wilson led GHS with 11 points against East Forsyth last Friday and was the Cats’ top rebounder versus Dawson County with six.

The Gilmer High Lady Cats dropped a pair of region basketball games last week. GHS was on the road for both and first made its way to Dawson County Tuesday. Gilmer turnovers led to more offensive opportunities for the Tigers who took advantage to claim a 48-38 win.
