Gilmer High tennis hit the road last Wednesday and was back at home the following day as it continued its region schedule.
The GHS Bobcats and Lady Cats faced the East Forsyth Broncos first and lost by respective scores of 4-1 and 3-2.Versus the West Hall Spartans, the Lady Cats came out on top, 4-1, while the Bobcats fell by the same margin.
Gilmer was back on the court Monday at home to sweep Woody Gap.
Ollie Burnett got the Lady Cats on the board versus East Forsyth and only lost one game in her two-set victory. Ellie Teague and Jessica Futch found the same success on the No. 1 doubles court with a win of 6-0, 6-1.
Gilmer’s No. 2 single Lyla Engle dropped her opening set, 7-5, and won the second, 6-2. EFHS took the deciding set, 6-1. The No. 2 tandem of Madison Bradshaw and Charlotte Davenport claimed an opening set win of 6-2 before losing the next two 6-3 and 6-1.
Lady Cat Lyric Lowman lost her No. 3 singles match 6-0, 6-0.
Burnett and Engle got GHS going against West Hall with wins of 6-0, 6-3 and 6-4, 6-0. Lowman lost both sets, 6-3. Teague and Futch rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 victory, and Bradshaw and Lucy Ray closed out the match with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph.
Top Bobcat doubles Ethan Banks and J.D. Taylor secured Gilmer’s win versus East Forsyth. They lost the first set before wins of 6-0 and 6-4. No. 2 doubles Kolby Reece and Eder Martinez lost 7-6, 6-3.
The Broncos earned wins on the singles court over Ethan Cole (6-3, 6-3), Law Lykins (6-1, 6-4) and Rylan Freeman (6-1, 6-2).
Banks and Taylor were victorious against West Hall as well, 6-2, 6-1. Reece and Martinez snagged a 6-4 second set win but lost the first and third by respective scores of 6-4 and 7-5.
Lykins took his first set 6-3 and lost the next two 6-3, 6-1. The Spartans got wins over Cole (6-3, 6-0) and Freeman (6-1, 6-4).
GHS changed up its lineup Monday versus Woody Gap. Singles Burnett (8-1) and Lyric Lowman (8-3) and doubles Teague and Futch (8-0) and Davenport and Hannah Lowman (8-6) all won.
The Bobcats completed the sweep with a singles victory by Martinez (8-0) and doubles wins by Reece and Larz Fowler (8-2) and Nathan Hall and Miles West (8-1).
The Bobcats and Lady Cats are both 4-6 overall and traveled to White County at press deadline. Gilmer meets Cherokee High Wednesday and hosts Lumpkin County Thursday. All matches start at 4 p.m.
