Cats maul Bears, Spartans

Over the past two games, the Gilmer High School Lady Cats outscored region opponents, 31-0.

In softball.

There was no replay needed last Friday when GHS traveled to Cherokee Bluff High School and bombed the Bears in four innings, 12-0.

Gilmer was at West Hall Monday and annihilated the Spartans, 19-0.

Last Friday’s shellacking came two weeks after GHS was ahead 6-0 against Cherokee Bluff before the rains came. The game was canceled and restarted from the beginning and this time it was official.

It was a another stellar day for the Cats offensively and defensively. GHS smacked 10 hits and Macy Hamby led the offensive charge with a grand slam and six RBIs.

Lady Cat pitcher Isabella Chastain continued to mow through opposing batters and had another two-hit performance while striking out six. The GHS defense did not commit any errors.

Hamby doubled home Gilmer’s initial run in the first before she sent the ball over the center field fence in the second inning to give the Cats a comfortable early cushion, 5-0.

GHS was back in business in the top of the fourth. Gilmer collected three hits but also took advantage of three hit batters and two walks. Both walks took place with the bases loaded.

Jacie Bennett drove in a run with a single. A run also crossed home plate when Hamby flew out. Taylor Elliott was there for a two-run double and the Cats’ final hit of the game as their lead swelled, 12-0.

Chastain made short work of the Bears in the bottom of the fourth and the game was called with the mercy rule in effect.

In addition to Hamby, Carly Chadwick and Bennett each had two hits. Jasmine Staley and Alaina Miltides both collected an RBI.

Versus West Hall, the Cats kept cruising.

They racked up 13 hits and Hamby was at the forefront of the offense one again with eight RBIs. Chastain tossed three perfect innings and struck out five.

It only took three innings for the Cats to end the game and they came alive for 11 runs in the first inning, six in the second and two more in the third.

Four Cats had multihit games. Hamby and Elliott tallied three each and Staley and Maddie Wright both had two. Elliot was also there for four RBIs, Alexis Sirmans drove in three runs and Staley, Jaylin Vick, Makenzie Taylor and Tori Hughes all had one RBI apiece.

GHS is 7-2 overall and hosted Dawson at press deadline.
