Another season is in the books for Gilmer High swimmers.
Gilmer attended last week’s GHSA State Championships at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center and advanced to the finals in four events.
At a state, teams from Class 1A through 3A compete against each other. The Bobcats top finish came in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Law Lykins, Ian Berry, Cheyne Smith and Jacob Kucera teamed up to take fifth place in 1:33.96.
Larz Fowler stepped in for Smith in the 400-yard freestyle relay and they clocked in at 3:35.41 for eighth.
Lykins was the lone Bobcat to compete in individual events and he turned in a pair of 10th place times. He finished the 100-yard freestyle in 56.46 and had a mark of 1:52.19 in the 200 free.
“I am so proud of these boys and how hard they have worked this season,” said head coach Paige Johnstone. “They all had personal best times in all of the events. It was a great experience for the boys, and they all had a great time.
“They showed hard work, determination and persistence throughout the season, even without having a true pool to swim in. As a whole, I am proud of each and every one of my swimmers this season. They have all worked hard and persevered to achieve their goals.”
Johnstone concluded by adding, “As this season has come to an end, I look forward to excelling in the program even further.
“We want to thank all of our parents, supporters and all of our sponsors who helped us get to this point.”
