Gilmer High wrestlers experienced a little bit of everything. First up was the 515 Classic last Wednesday in Jasper, and the Bobcats defeated Union County (41-30), Fannin County (70-12) and Pickens (57-19).

The buzz saw that is the Gilmer Lady Cats’ basketball schedule got underway.  GHS faced a pair of ranked region opponents, and the Lady Cats’ slate began last Tuesday evening against No. 4 Pickens. Gilmer’s southern rival stormed out of the gates and ran away for a 56-26 win.

The Candy Cane Invitational was the latest destination for Gilmer High swimmers. GHS was in Murphy, N.C., last Saturday, and Bobcat Jacob Kucera qualified for the state meet. Kucera solidified his state spot when he achieved a qualifying time in the 50-yard freestyle of 23.31.

Clear Creek Middle School met league foes Union and White counties to continue league basketball action. The Bobcats earned three wins on the week. The seventh graders hosted Union last Monday and won, 39-35, before topping White (45-40) on the road three days later.

The Gilmer Lady Cats showed vast improvement in a pair of road victories. GHS continued its nonregion schedule versus Murray County last Tuesday. The Cats were able to secure a six-point lead at the half before the Indians evened the score heading into the fourth.

Jackson McVey snatched a school-record 30 rebounds to go with 37 points in Gilmer’s victory. The GHS Bobcats were in Murray County to take on the Indians last Tuesday, and Ryder Wofford and J.D. Taylor gave Gilmer a potent scoring trio.

Gilmer High faced off against some of the best girls teams in the state. Last Saturday’s Big 10 Duals at Woodward Academy included the top teams from last season. Gilmer finished with a 3-1 record for third place.

Clear Creek Middle School notched six more wins on the basketball court. The seventh- and eighth-grade Lady Cats both earned wins over Lumpkin County (45-33 and 47-29, respectively) before decisive victories versus Pickens (46-16 and 51-21).
