Mountain Mayhem raises nearly $8.5K for CASA

It was a big week in Ellijay for the fastest growing recreational sport in the country. The Mountain Mayhem Pickleball Tournament was held last Friday and Saturday at Bill Keener Courts, and 280 players were in attendance.

GHS summer camps underway

Gilmer High’s youth summer camps began this week with girls basketball, football and soccer. Cheerleading camp will be June 9-12 at the Clear Creek Middle School’s gym from 9 a.m. to noon. The camp is open to girls who are entering pre-K through sixth grade.

Inaugural GHS flag football team set

Girls flag football is the fastest growing sport in the Georgia High School Association, and Gilmer High will take the field this fall. The sport was first sanctioned and offered by the GHSA in 2020.

GHS summer youth camps on tap next

Summer vacation is right around the corner for the county’s students, and Gilmer High School will hold its annual slate of youth sports camps beginning next month. Girls basketball camp will be June 2-4 at the GHS gym from 10 a.m. to noon.
Gilmer High held its annual seniors versus juniors flag football game May 14. The seniors added two scores in the second half, which included a touchdown pass from quarterback Caylee Elrod to receiver Julibelle Queen (14) for a 19-6 victory.

Spring concludes for Cats

Gilmer High football wrapped up the beginning stage of the 2025 season. Spring practice ended last Wednesday with 82 players on the roster, which include 37 rising freshmen. Head coach Paul Standard said he was “pleased” with the Bobcats’ efforts.
Gilmer High sophomore Noah Wright carded a four-over par 76 and was the low medalist at the Area 4-3A Championships.

Gilmer sophomore Noah Wright is the area’s No. 1 golfer. GHS attended the 10-team Area 4-3A Championships at Heron Bag Golf Course April 28. Wright was the low medalist with a career best four-over par 76.
