Gilmer, Pickens split rivalry softball series

Gilmer and Pickens met last week on the softball field under different circumstances.

While the rivalry still thrives, the GHS Lady Cats and Dragonettes are no longer region opponents after the former dropped down to Class 3A. 

The two-game series concluded with the away team earning wins each time.

Gilmer hosted Pickens Tuesday and fell in extra innings, 5-4. Two days later, the Cats traveled to PHS and were able to get hits with runners on base for a 13-10 victory. 

“Luckily, in the second game we strung hits together,” GHS coach Amanda Mullis said. “In the first game, we couldn’t put hits together at all. We couldn’t get our bunts down or make anything happen. We played better defense in the first game than we did in the second game.”

Game one was played fairly evenly. Pickens had five hits to Gilmer’s six. The Dragonettes committed four errors. The Cats’ tallied three, and none of Pickens’ runs were earned. PHS took advantage of eight walks but timely hits were not there.

An error accounted for Pickens’ run in the first inning and the Cats scored in the same fashion in the third. 

Another error allowed GHS to pull ahead in the fifth. Lady Cat Maddie Wright reached with two outs on a wild throw to first and scored when Macy Hamby tripled.
