Early deadlines for Memorial Day

On Monday, May 26, the Times-Courier will be closed to observe Memorial Day. Deadlines for the May 28 edition will be early due to the holiday. All ads, classified ads, legal notices and news submissions are due by 3 p.m. Thursday, May 22.  Normal deadlines will resume the following week.

Significant changes to senate bill addressing AI

Passing legislation at the state level, protecting children from the consequences of AI-generated sexually explicit material, has hit some roadblocks. The language was stripped from the senate bill that now addresses political deepfakes instead.

Earthquake reported

An earthquake has shaken homes and people’s nerves across north Georgia. It was strongly felt in Ellijay around 9:15 this morning.  Gilmer County Emergency Management reported that a 4.1 magnitude quake happened near Greenback, Tenn.

Sounding the alarm on suicide rates

Suicide rates are increasing at an accelerated rate in the county. There have been at least four so far this year, according to the Gilmer County Coroner’s Office.  The coroner’s office reported that the county has some of the highest suicide rates in all of Georgia.

Man behind bars, facing child exploitation charges

A former law enforcement officer and Gilmer County resident is behind bars, facing multiple charges of sexual exploitation of children.  The Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office arrested Stephen Hewitt, 69, Wednesday, April 30, following an investigation into alleged child exploitation crimes.

The “goat” escape: herd returned to owner after wandering 14 miles

A gang of goats escaped from their enclosure over the weekend and were found a whopping 14 miles away from home. The Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office utilized social media to track down their owner.
