Gilmer native Thomas Brown was killed in World War I

When Thomas Monroe Brown joined the U.S. Army during World War I, he didn’t know he had less than a year to live. Brown, who was born in Gilmer County, was listed as a resident of Eton in Murray County when he was killed in action in October 1918.

Push for impact fees at Citizens Forum

As new subdivisions pop up and plans for apartments are developed, some community members believe impact fees should be enforced to better keep up with county growth.

The first-ever Ellijay Flag Day ceremony at the Lions Club Fairgrounds is seeking dozens of volunteers to help hold up a 50-foot by 100-foot American flag on June 14, celebrated as Flag Day across America.

Awarding “excellence” to round out the school year

The Gilmer County Schools System, staff members and students are raking in some final, prestigious awards before the school year comes to a close.  Gilmer High student Raul Avila-Resendiz was selected as Georgia’s 2025 Migrant Student of the Year by the state’s Department of Education.
Gilmer Arts’ 11th annual Plein Air was a success, where 37 artists painted serene landscapes around the county, from May 15-18. Sunday morning, artists could participate in a Quick Draw competition at Hidden Valley, where they had just two hours to complete their piece, including long-time Plein Air participant Marti Trimble. Earthquake felt across the region

An earthquake has shaken homes and people’s nerves across north Georgia. It was strongly felt in Ellijay shortly after 9 a.m. Saturday.  Gilmer County Emergency Management (EMA) reported that a 4.1 magnitude quake originated near Greenback, Tenn.

Zoning request approved for low-income apartments

Gilmer County commissioners have approved plans for a new, low-income apartment complex in East Ellijay in a 2-1 vote at last Thursday’s board of commissioners meeting.  The apartment complex inquiry is called the Mountain View Terrace project, with 50 units planned.

Memorial Day fundraiser to help struggling veterans

This Memorial Day, there will be a Heroes Helping Heroes Georgia charity benefit for Shelter Dogs for Veterans and Save the Horses, two nonprofits that are helping veterans who struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injuries (TBI).
