Primary election started off with some bumps in Gilmer County according to Election Superintendent Scott Chastain. He said voting was delayed in Cherry Log and Tails Creek due to operator error with the new voting machines.

Ellijay-Gilmer County Water and Sewerage Authority board members approved master and supplemental resolutions needed to proceed in refinancing revenue bonds in the amount of $6.85 million during a brief teleconference meeting last Wednesday. “We are redeeming the old 2015 bonds.

A bluebird trail maintained by the Friends of Harrison Park will welcome another brood of baby birds this summer and the group hopes parkgoers will take time to enjoy walking the trail when visiting.

Animal shelter begins phased reopening with pet drop offs, stray pick ups

The Gilmer County Animal Shelter began its first phase of reopening the facility at 4152 Highway 52 East last Friday, although the actual building remains closed to the public for the time being.

Activities in place to minimize academic regression over summer

If Gilmer Schools reopen as scheduled this fall, it will have been nearly five months since students were in a traditional class setting. Students have not been in classrooms since March 13 because of the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic.

Barbecue restaurateur, conservative political enthusiast Col. Oscar Poole passes at 90

Col. Oscar Poole, a longtime Gilmer County resident whose East Ellijay barbecue restaurant became known far and wide for both its home cooking and conservative political functions, passed away Sunday, May 31, 2020. He was 90 years old.
