Food pantry to mark 20th anniversary

The Gilmer Community Food Pantry will mark two decades of providing food to local residents next month. A 20th anniversary reception is scheduled for Monday, May 3, at the pantry facility at 5273 Highway 52 East.

Cold snap did some apple damage

Land use ordinance ready for vote

Version 9 of changes to the Gilmer County land use ordinance is the one being advertised for a vote. Gilmer County’s Board of Commissioners made the decision at the April 8 regular meeting. “I’m glad there isn’t going to be a version 10,” said Chairman Charlie Paris.

Bee hotels new additions at Harrison Park

New “bee hotels” at Harrison Park are exactly what they sound like. The wooden, hanging boxes provide shelter for bees that aren’t part of a hive.

Retired educator happily turns 100

An Ellijay woman who recently turned 100 has a simple explanation for her longevity. “Hard work, clean living, and a strong faith in God,” have been cornerstones for Marie Holt, who marked the big occasion April 7.

Gilmer Senior Center, food pantry partner for new ‘satellite’ program

A new “satellite food pantry” effort is bringing services of the Gilmer Community Food Pantry to the county’s senior center in downtown Ellijay. The first delivery of food to the Gilmer Senior Center was made last week, confirmed Allen Triebel, the food pantry’s director.

Road damage from storms estimated at over $200K

As of last week, almost 80 roads in the county were listed as having received some type of damage from severe storms that tore through March 25 and 26.  The storm damage was widespread across the county, confirmed Gilmer Public Works Director Jim Smith.
