As construction of a traffic roundabout ramps up, a new three-way stop at the intersection of Old Highway 5 and Highway 382 -may be catching some drivers by surprise.
The three-way stop was installed on Monday, April 5, noted Joe Schulman, of the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) District 6 office. Previously, there was just one stop sign at where 382 feeds into Old 5 near Green’s Store.
Roadside warning signs that read “new stop ahead” and “be prepared to stop” have been put up to notify passersby. While drivers should be aware of the traffic changes, the additional stop signs will not be permanent, Schulman noted.
“The three-way stop was installed as part of the temporary traffic control in that area as staged construction takes place. It is not permanent and will be removed as soon as the project allows. It will be in place for about a month depending on weather affecting construction progress,” he added.
Schulman said one reason the stop signs were installed is because GDOT and contractors are elevating the roadway to the design elevation needed for the project. There’s also a new traffic shift near the intersection marked by a detour sign.
“This current shift in traffic resulted in motorists having issues seeing traffic from other directions. The stop signs were added to address this issue,” Schulman said.
