Property values going up, assessment notices show

Gilmer County property owners can expect to see some type of increase in their county-assessed values this year. The assessors office expected to have assessment notices for the year in the mail by Monday, May 24, said Chief Appraiser Theresa Gooch at a board of assessors meeting last week.

Doubles teams needed for Optimist Club’s first tennis tournament

The Gilmer County Optimist Club is looking for  teams to take to the courts for its first fundraising tennis tournament. The inaugural Justin Elliott Memorial Tennis Tournament will raise money for future Gilmer Optimist Club projects Saturday and Sunday, June 12-13. Check-in starts at 8:30 p.m.

Vaccination rate remains low

With numerous COVID-19 vaccine tracking resources available, it’s fairly easy to find vaccination rate data for Georgia counties. However, agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Georgia Department of Public Health use different data to compile their vaccination totals.

Gas shortage brings lines, concern around county

By the end of last Tuesday, a gas shortage due to the cyberattack for ransom of the Colonial Pipeline, the nation’s primary carrier of refined oil products, caused many pump handles in Gilmer to be bagged, awaiting refills.

Three arrested in connection to murder

Three people sought in connection with the murder of a woman in Cherry Log were arrested in Mexico. Megan Alyssa Colone, 30, of Stone Mountain, and Oscar Manuel Garcia, 26, of Austell, were arrested along with a third man, Juan Antonio Vega, 25, of Cobb County.

Board to revisit park naming

Gilmer County commissioners are exploring options following a vote to name River Park in honor of the Ralston family. The problem, the river park was already named in honor of Harold Hefner. It is officially the Harold Hefner River Park.

FOGAS discount pet vaccination clinic Saturday

Friends of the Gilmer Animal Shelter (FOGAS) will continue their efforts to provide low-cost pet vaccinations this Saturday.  The local nonprofit’s second discount pet vaccination clinic will be held Saturday, May 22, 8 a.m.-noon, in the county courthouse parking lot behind Dalton State College.

Summer Reading Program returns live

The Gilmer County Library will welcome back live entertainment and activities for its upcoming Summer Reading Program. This year, the free educational summer program, which runs June 1-July 31, has an animal-related theme, Tails & Tales, noted Alex Thomerson, library manager.
