Vineyard owner asks for personal property tax review

The owner of a local wine vineyard asked the Gilmer Board of Assessors to consider reaching a settlement for back personal property taxes during the board’s Thursday, March 18, meeting.

Ninety-one Gilmer County educators and staff members have received the COVID-19 vaccine and more are scheduled to do so this week. The process was set into motion Feb. 25. Gov.

Gilmer’s new COVID cases declining, but still considered high

In a week where more Georgians were made eligible to receive COVID-19 vaccines and a presidential announcement was made concerning nationwide eligibility for all adults, Gilmer County’s new COVID cases have declined, but, according to the director of North Georgia Health District, still remain high.

Firefighters can’t predict  exactly how many calls they’ll have in a given 24-hour period.  However, when seven fires spring up in a day’s time, that’s definitely more than usual, confirmed Gilmer County Fire Chief Daniel Kauffman.

Catalytic converter theft, a crime that pops up intermittently in Gilmer County, has surprised and inconvenienced several local small businessowners during the past year.

Hungry black bears beginning to emerge

The Appalachia Georgia Friends of the Bears would like to remind the public that March marks the time for the black bears to emerge from their dens.  The first to wake up are the adult males and subadults in early to mid-March.

Gilmer ran into a buzz saw last week when it met the North Hall Trojans. The shorthanded GHS Bobcats faced region opponent and the No. 2 ranked baseball team in Class 3A for a three-game series.  NH took game one at home Monday in five innings, 10-0. Game two was played in Ellijay Wednesday.

Tabor House Museum opens for new season

Following a standard seasonal closure that was preceded by being closed nearly three months after the March 2020 COVID-19 shutdown, the Gilmer Historical Society’s Tabor House Museum will reopen for a new season beginning Thursday, March 18.  Its hours of operation will be 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
