Gilmer County commissioners are exploring options following a vote to name River Park in honor of the Ralston family.
The problem, the river park was already named in honor of Harold Hefner. It is officially the Harold Hefner River Park.
“We’ve got a lot of discussion ahead of us,” said Gilmer County Chair Charlie Paris. “We’re looking to see how that might be modified to honor both.”
Originally the proposal at the monthly work session was made to name the walking trail in honor of the Ralston family, which includes Speaker David Ralston, for their service and contributions to the county.
It was brought up by Parks and Rec Director Kevan White that many people worked to develop the park including many who are honored on a marble sign at the park, including Harold Hefner.
After discussion, the decision was made to name the park the Ralston River Park.
Following the regular meeting the mistake was realized.
“We don’t want to do anything to upset anyone,” Paris said. “This was done to honor someone, not dishonor someone.”
At a future meeting a solution will be proposed, he said.
“One that honors everybody,” Paris said.
Other business
﹣ commissioners approved the first reading of the altered land use ordinance.
﹣ voted to abandon an agreement with Murray County for the maintenance of Woodring Branch Road, Emerald Cove Drive and Mulberry Gap Road. Public Works Director Jim Smith said Gilmer County’s portion of the agreement was costing the county more.
﹣ voted to advertise for paving bids including one for Boardtown Road.
﹣ added Old Parker Place Road and Old Parker Terrace to the LMIG paving project.
