Two North Carolina residents were arrested and 10.9 grams of heroin were seized in Gilmer County. Jamie Willis Whitener, 44, and Natalie Lynn Scogin, 47, both of Murphy, N.C., were charged with trafficking heroin after being stopped on Hwy. 515 North in Gilmer County March 30.

GBI seeks help identifying man

An unidentified man has been found dead on Springer Mountain. The man was found off the Benton MacKaye Trail in Fannin County Jan. 21. He is believed to be a hiker. Georgia Bureau of Investigation agents are seeking the public’s help in identifying the man.

The East Ellijay City Council has approved letting $40,000 of unused American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) grant funding go to the county fire and rescue department. If not spent, the grant funding received by East Ellijay has to be sent back, noted Mayor Mack West during a March 22 city council meeting.

The area where Gilmer Parks and Rec. tennis courts sat for many years will eventually provide something that River Park always needs more of — parking spaces. The courts just off South Main Street have been demolished over the past few months, and piled rubble is all that remain of them now.

July Fourth may look and sound a lot less lively in downtown Ellijay this year. The City of Ellijay is currently without a vendor to do the annual community fireworks show, confirmed Mayor Al Hoyle.
