The owners of a downtown Ellijay antique shop are among the business owners on North Main Street who want to see some type of pedestrian safety improvements on the increasingly busy street.

The Gilmer Chamber recognized its Citizen of the Year, while also presenting Business, Member and Community Champion of the Year Awards, at the chamber’s annual meeting and gala Saturday, March 5.

Waddell wins SoCon title, qualifies for nationals

Matthew Waddell is a Southern Conference wrestling champion and has qualified for nationals. Waddell, a Gilmer High School alum, is currently a junior at the University of Tennessee — Chattanooga and wrestles for the Mocs at 197 pounds.

Susan Littlejohn, proprietor of Build an Ark Animal Rescue, appeared in Gilmer County Magistrate Court Friday, March 4, to answer four charges of animal cruelty brought by the county’s animal control department.

Discussions have begun between the administrations of Gilmer County, Ellijay and East Ellijay about the division of the Local Option Sales Tax. Mayors for both cities are looking for a 1 percent increase to their share of the sales tax.

Board approves $754K in water plant projects

Ellijay-Gilmer County Water and Sewerage Authority board members approved $754,000 in expenses for infrastructure improvements at the local water treatment plant when meeting Monday, Feb. 28.

Due to the inclement weather forecast, the St. Petrick's festivities have been cancelled.     The eye-catching animal and shamrock signs up around downtown Ellijay mean it’s about time for another St. Petrick’s Celebration, which will take place Saturday, March 12, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

Farmers market to continue with some changes

A popular farmers market held in downtown Ellijay spring to early fall will continue this year, but with some changes. Among those changes will be the name of the seasonal market, as well as the leadership and sponsorship needed to make it happen, confirmed Chris Cleberg, market coordinator.
