Ukraine relief fund started at Ellijay church

An Ellijay church has started a relief fund for Ukraine through which donations will be handled by a Methodist outreach group with a good reputation for getting money where it should go.

BoE approves gym video scoreboards for $297K

Gilmer High School’s gym will have a pair of new video scoreboards at the start of the 2022-2023 academic year. The scoreboard package was approved by a 4 to 1 Gilmer County Board of Education vote at its March 17 regular meeting and comes in at a grand total of $297,879.

Gilmer County commissioners used a special called meeting to finalize some outstanding details. Issues discussed included a new phone system for the county, an HVAC system for the jail and courthouse and division of the coming LOST period.

Rising costs prompt water authority budget increase

The Ellijay-Gilmer County Water and Sewerage Board of Directors approved adjusting the water authority’s 2021-22 budget to compensate for rising costs in several areas when meeting Monday, March 21.

Restoring forgotten cemetery an ongoing team project

Members of two local history-minded groups are among those working to restore a forgotten cemetery in the Yukon area of the county. Rose Cemetery, the burial place at Raven Cliff Drive and John Teem Road, is believed to be an African-American cemetery dating back to the 1800s.

Car club gearing up for cruise-in season

Members of the Apple Country Auto Club are gearing up to restart their monthly cruise-ins in April with a full season of the events planned this year. The local car club held several cruise-ins last year at Poole’s Bar-B-Q in East Ellijay, which was a new location then.

Some freeze damage to fruit crops expected, but extent not known

Local apple and peach crops may have been damaged to some degree by a recent cold snap with temperatures in the teens and 20s, but it’s too early to know how much, the county’s extension agent said last week.

Bridge construction set for December 2022

Gilmer County has received information the construction of a new Lower Cartecay Bridge may begin by the end of this year. The schedule to let bids and begin construction has been changed several times in the years since the bridge was first closed in April 2017.
