Donors offer $400,000 for animal shelter

Two unnamed donors have approached Gilmer County Chair Charlie Paris with a Christmas present for the county animal shelter, a donation of $200,000. Paris told commissioners earlier in the month a donor approached him about donating $200,000 if the county would match the money.

Gilmer’s 2021 budget set

Gilmer County commissioners passed a budget for 2021. In a departure from previous years, the commission approved the maintenance and operations budget, the capital outlay budget and the debt service budgets separately. All passed unanimously at a special meeting Dec. 18.

Mountain View Elementary teacher Carly Chron wanted to encourage reading and give her students a gift for Christmas. Using social media, she asked people to donate by picking a number from one-19 and then matched the number with a book for a student.

The Ellijay City Council approved several new or renewed alcohol licenses, including one with a stipulation, when closing out the year with a brief meeting Monday, Dec. 21.

January software upgrade to halt vehicle registration services

A statewide upgrade to DRIVES (Driver Record and Integrated Vehicle Enterprise System) software used by Georgia’s tag/title and driver’s license offices will put a temporary hold on several motor vehicle-related services Jan. 13-18.

County and city firefighters, schools team up for 12th annual Christmas for Kids

The far-reaching COVID-19 pandemic didn’t extinguish a long-running Christmas outreach effort done by local firefighters.

Food pantry reaches out to local families

The Gilmer Community Food Pantry was able to provide four local families with enough food for Christmas dinner, and then some, as part of a special holiday program.

Shop With a Hero program reaches out to local third-fifth graders

Representatives of city, county and state public safety agencies were able to make Christmas brighter for several local children as part of this year’s Shop With a Hero program.
