Mooney honored at Georgia State Capitol

A Gilmer County native who’s cut a wide swath as professional rodeo announcer was recognized at the Georgia State Capitol just before 2020 drew to a close. Sen.

A Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) chapter that covers Gilmer County presented year-end awards to two local firefighter/EMTs before 2020 ended.

Woman charged in fatal accident

An Ellijay woman is being charged with homicide by vehicle and driving under the influence in a one-vehicle accident Jan. 28 in which she was injured and her passenger killed.

Free books readily available around town

The Gilmer School System’s plan to promote reading and literacy in the county is now in place. The school system unveiled its vision to install library kiosks at various locations in the county about a year ago.

Rollout of COVID-19 vaccine begins

History was made last week when Gilmer County’s first shipments of COVID-19 vaccine arrived at multiple locations to be received by health care workers, as well as staff and residents of long-term care facilities.

Early voting coming to an end

Deadlines to cast ballots for the Jan. 5 runoff for the two U.S. Senate races in Georgia are approaching. A statewide public service commissioner race is on the ballot as well. Gilmer County Chief Registrar Tammy Watkins said turnout has been high for the runoff. “It’s been great,” she said.

New assessor’s office website design to go live in January

Local property owners will be able to apply for homestead exemptions and file appeals online beginning in 2021, the county’s chief appraiser told Gilmer Board of Assessors members during their last meeting of the year Thursday, Dec. 17.
