A church pastor originally from Ellijay played a role in the recent memorial service for former First Lady Rosalynn Carter.  Carter passed away Nov. 19 at age 96. Her memorial service was held at Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church on the campus of Atlanta’s Emory University last Tuesday.

Christmas parade wraps ‘Light Up’

Despite rain throughout the day, a festive parade proceeded through Downtown Ellijay, putting bows and ribbons on this year’s two-part Light Up Ellijay festivities last Saturday. “I’m really glad the weather broke so that we could give Ellijay the parade.

When Keith McClain and his fellow Marines began pulling sailors out of the bay, the men who had been aboard the bombed USS Arizona were speechless. “They were in a state of shock,” the late McClain said in an interview published on December 7, 1991.

Mark Congdon described himself as “just a dumb kid from Stone Mountain who had never been on a ship” when he joined the United States Coast Guard in 1980. “I served a four-year hitch with three years aboard the Taney,” he said of the vessel described as a USCGC, or U.S. Coast Guard Cutter.

Local alcohol producers awarded at statewide competition

Gilmer County’s alcoholic beverage producers made another fine showing at a recent statewide competition. Several of the county’s wineries and one distillery brought home awards from the 2023 Georgia Trustees Wine and Spirits competition held in Alpharetta.

The Gilmer Arts Community Chorus (GACC) and instrumentalists will be joined by the Clear Creek Middle School (CCMS) Chorus in presenting a program of Christmas holiday favorites for our community.  The concert will be held at the Ellijay Elementary School Auditorium at 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3.
