Ellijay City Council annexes residential, commercial properties

A quorum of Ellijay City Councilmembers approved annexing two properties expected to see future construction into the city limits, but not before hearing opinions for and against the requested annexations during last Monday’s council meeting.  One of the properties, two parcels totaling 3.

Housing study town hall scheduled

A town hall-style meeting scheduled for Monday, Dec. 4, will address the results of a recent countywide housing study. The meeting, which is being presented by the Gilmer Initiative for Community Housing (GICH), will be held at the Ellijay Elementary School Auditorium. Doors are at 6 p.m.

County burn ban in place until further notice

Gilmer County, including the cities of Ellijay and East Ellijay, will remain under an outdoor burn ban until further notice. Gilmer Fire and Rescue announced that decision Monday after initially extending the countywide burn ban, which has been in effect since Nov. 6, until Nov. 27.

Lions Club White Christmas sign-up this Saturday

Applications will be accepted for one of Gilmer County’s longest running Christmas outreach programs this Saturday. The Ellijay Lions Club will be signing up families for its White Christmas program from 9 a.m-4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, at the Lions Club, 1729 South Main Street.

Smartphone app new resource for sheriff’s office

The Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) is now smartphone compatible. A new app for the sheriff’s office is available for Apple and Google devices, the county law enforcement agency announced last week. Created by app developer OCV and TheSheriffApp.

Gilmer ‘natural disaster’ drought area

Gilmer is among 11 north Georgia counties that were declared natural disaster areas by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) last week. The emergency declaration issued by U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack is due to the extreme drought conditions still present here.

Light Up Ellijay a two-parter this year

This year, downtown Ellijay’s “Light Up” festivities will cover two days starting the day after Thanksgiving.  The traditional lighting of the town Christmas tree, which was put up last week on the square, will be done Friday, Nov. 24, at 6 p.m.

Countywide burn ban extended

A countywide ban on outdoor burning has been extended another week. The burn ban was first issued for Nov. 6-Nov. 20. It will now remain in effect till Nov. 27, at which time it could possibly be extended again if dry conditions don’t improve.
