County eyes Georgia CARES Act funds

Gilmer County commissioners have approved the Georgia CARES Act contract, which is the first step toward applying for funds dealing with the county’s COVID-19 (coronavirus) response. Chairman Charlie Paris and Post Commissioner Hubert Parker approved the contract at a special meeting July 30.

Public assisting in hit-and-run fatality case

Although authorities are continuing to get tips on a possible suspect in the July 25 hit-and-run death of pedestrian Ted Oliver, no arrest had been made as of late Monday, according to the Gilmer County jail.

Assessors office submits real property digest

The Gilmer County Board of Assessors approved submission of the real property portion of the 2020 tax digest when meeting Wednesday, July 15. Chief Appraiser Theresa Gooch said a total of 802 qualified sales took place during the digest year.

Hope Lutheran taking donations for international children’s shoe drive

This year will be the 13th in which Ellijay Hope Lutheran Church has served as a drop-off point for an international shoe drive that directly serves orphan and vulnerable children.  The Shoes for Orphan Souls drive is sponsored by Buckner International, an international Christian nonprofit.

Ellijay man killed in hit and run

An Ellijay man was killed in a hit and run Saturday night. Teddy F. Oliver, 64, was walking in the westbound lane of Hwy. 52 East when he was struck by an unknown vehicle which left the scene, according to the Georgia State Patrol Public Information Office. It occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m.
