An Ellijay man was killed in a hit and run Saturday night.
Teddy F. Oliver, 64, was walking in the westbound lane of Hwy. 52 East when he was struck by an unknown vehicle which left the scene, according to the Georgia State Patrol Public Information Office. It occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m. on July 25.
Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office is working with the Georgia State Patrol Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team to investigate the death and find the driver and vehicle involved, said Capt. Frank Copeland of the sheriff’s office.
A report by Cpl. Melissa Blaylock said she picked up a call from dispatch about a man walking in the roadway of Hwy. 52 East.
As she approached East Side Grill, Blaylock said she noticed something lying on the side of the west bound traffic lane, but was looking for a man walking. She searched up the highway close to Lower Cartecay Road, then turned around and returned.
When she returned to the spot she noticed red sneakers lying in the road and realized what she had seen earlier was a person, the incident report said.
Blaylock activated her lights and ran to check on Oliver. He was deceased, according to the report.
Copeland said anyone who has information about the hit and run should call the Gilmer County investigation division at 706-635-4646 or call the communications center at 911.
