Gilmer Learning Center offering in-person, online options for GED, language studies

The staff of the Gilmer Learning Center wants anyone who needs help with their GED exam studies or learning English or Spanish to know the center is back up and running while also using safety precautions for students and staff.

Plans in place for GHS football home opener

Following a lengthy discussion at the board of education meeting two weeks ago, Gilmer High School has adopted more concrete plans for the football home opener Sept. 11 versus Fannin County.

It’s hoped that a medical information program new to Gilmer County will expedite emergency response efforts of local police and fire departments if they respond to calls involving registered persons.

City of Ellijay to receive 89K in CARES Act funds

The City of Ellijay has already received 30 percent of a total $89,724 in relief funds provided by the CARES Act and it has been approved to soon receive the rest of that total amount, confirmed Mayor Al Hoyle.

Execution scheduled for 2001 case

The Federal Bureau of Prisons has scheduled the execution of William Emmett LeCroy Jr. for Sept. 22 following his 2004 death sentence for the murder of Joann Tiesler. Tiesler, a 30-year-old Cherry Log resident, was a nurse practitioner at Mountain Medical with Dr.

The Cherry Log Festival, a longtime fall tradition in Gilmer County, will not take place this year, but one of its most popular attractions, a homemade canned goods booth, will be open for business Saturday and Sunday, Oct.

Local groomer lost home, dogs in fire

Friends and clients are showing support for a local dog groomer whose home was recently destroyed in a fire.  Erin O’Neill said neither she, nor her two children were at home when the fire occurred at the residence in the Wildcat Creek Road area.

Bunch brings COVID-19 concerns to BOE

Nixon Bunch expressed his concern for limited mask usage and the inability to social distance inside classrooms during the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic. Bunch, a second-year 10th grade geometry teacher at Gilmer High School, spoke at the board of education’s regular meeting last Thursday.
