Commissioners go with rollback rate

Gilmer County’s Board of Commissioners voted to advertise the rollback rate for the county’s millage rate. According to Georgia law, county’s cannot collect more in property taxes than the previous year without calling it a tax increase, said Chairman Charlie Paris.

Standoff ends without violence

Cherokee County’s SWAT team rolled through Ellijay midday last week on their way to a standoff. Gwinnett County’s Sheriff Department asked the Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office for assistance in retrieving a suspect in a rape from a home in Gilmer County, said Gilmer Capt. Frank Copeland.

Ellijay woman faces drug charges

A Murphy woman was arrested last week in a large-scale distribution operation that police uncovered last month. At the same time, authorities displayed compassion in waiting to arrest 29-year-old Melissa Jean Lee, who officials say cared for her grandmother.

Keep Gilmer Beautiful (KGB) has announced a reschedule date for an electronics recycling event that was originally scheduled to take place in conjunction with the community beautification group’s Earth Day activities. The new date for the e-recycling  day is Saturday, Sept. 26.
