With heavy hearts and prayerful concern, the Good Samaritans of Fannin County are canceling Saturday and Monday events for the 2020 Labor Day Bar-B-Q Weekend.

Primary pandemic-related concerns include increased supply and meat costs, the protected age category of our volunteer base and difficulty of social distancing in the park given the number of guests and volunteers.

The Labor Day BBQ Weekend is the primary fundraiser for the Good Samaritan benevolence fund assisting Fannin County neighbors in need since 1985.

What should have been the 40th annual Labor Day Bar-B-Q on Monday will not be held for the reasons stated above. On Saturday, our Pic-Nic-Nac in the Park offering arts and crafts, as well as nonprofit and area information booths and the classic car show, will not take place.

However, on Sunday, Good Samaritans will host their annual interdenominational worship service at 6 p.m. Pastors from participating churches will take part in the interdenominational service that is attended by parishioners and the community, as well as folks who are visiting in our area.

Plan to stay after the service to enjoy the ice cream social graciously donated by Dairy Queen of Blue Ridge. All are welcome and invited to come join in our Labor Day BBQ tradition of prayer, song, worship and ice cream!

Please note that the service will not be in the park this year. The outdoor service will be held on East First Street in the First Baptist parking lot with the stage shelter across from the church. The service will be broadcast from the stage, so folks may remain in their cars or bring lawn chairs to sit in front of the stage.

A Labor Day Bar-B-Q Weekend without barbecue just did not seem right, so Good Sam volunteers invite you to a “drive thru” lunch Sunday, from 11:30-1:30 p.m., at the Fannin County Senior Center. Barbecue sandwich plates, tea and packaged desserts will be available at no charge. Donations to the Good Sam Benevolence Fund are welcome to help offset financial losses due to the cancellations.

The Good Samaritans regret the necessity of the cancellations and pray for safety for our community, our country and the world in the midst of this ongoing pandemic.
