The investigation indicates that at approximately 2:30 p.m.

Gilmer man charged with rape

A man is facing a rape charge in Gilmer County.
Roscoe Benny Sharpe, Jr, 53, was arrested and charged with rape by the Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office Feb. 5.
The incident allegedly occurred in November 2020.
Sharpe offered the alleged victim a ride in his van to meet a friend.

Deputy placed on leave following arrest

A Gilmer County deputy was placed on leave after being arrested in Pickens County while off-duty.
Sgt. Jason Lynn Newman, 34, of Talking Rock, is being held on charges of aggravated assault, aggravated battery, interferring with a 911 call, obstructing police and reckless conduct.

GHS student found with bullet, school locked down

Gilmer High School was locked down last Wednesday morning.
As classes were set to get under way, a student informed an assistant principal that “she had seen a gun and some ammo in another student’s backpack,” according to GHS principal Carla Foley.
