Ellijay council OKs hotel-motel tax increase

The Ellijay City Council approved raising the city’s hotel-motel tax, while also giving a first reading of a previously stalled short-term rental ordinance, during its first meeting of the year Monday, Jan. 24.

Too fast, slow down!

Newly installed solar speed signs are a constant reminder of the 25 mph speed limit for much of downtown Ellijay. The flashing digital signs recently went up on each of downtown’s four main roads — River, North Main, Dalton and South Main Street.

Assessor board sees leadership change

The Gilmer County Board of Tax Assessors underwent a change of leadership during its first meeting of the year Thursday, Jan. 20. Bill Logan, previously the board’s vice chairman, was elected chairman, while board member Jerry Davis was elected vice chairman.

GHS Theater presents ‘The Odd Couple’ this weekend

A stage comedy with firm footing in American pop culture will be performed by Gilmer High School (GHS) students this weekend. “The Odd Couple” will be presented as GHS Theater’s winter show Friday, Feb. 4-Sunday, Feb. 6, at the high school’s Linda Miller Theater. Showtimes are Friday at 7 p.m.

Gilmer wrestling appeals to GHSA

For the second season in a row, a cloud hangs over the Class 3A wrestling duals state title. Just like a year ago, Gilmer High School has sent an appeal to the Georgia High School Association.

Lodging tax increase moves forward

Gilmer County’s hotel/motel/lodging tax will be moving from 5 percent to 8 percent following a second vote of the board of commissioners. The board voted to to ask Speaker David Ralston to introduce a local bill raising the lodging tax in Gilmer County, at a special called meeting Jan. 24.
