Old Highway 5 tire shop burns

An Ellijay tire shop and garage was destroyed in an early morning fire last Wednesday. Gilmer Fire and Rescue and the Ellijay Fire Department both responded to the call.

Sheriff says mental health reform needed

Georgia House Speaker David Ralston filed House Bill 1013 to reform the state’s mental health care delivery system. “Mental health issues touch almost every family in this state,” he said. “For much too long, our mental health care delivery system has been inadequate.

New BoE district map adopted

Changes to Gilmer’s board of education districts have been approved by a 3-0 vote. Georgia’s Legislative and Congressional Reappointment Office released its school board districts for Gilmer County last month. At the board of education’s work session Jan.

Purvis, Stover named Star Student, Teacher at GHS

Kinsleigh Purvis, a senior at Gilmer High School, said she feels “honored and blessed” to represent GHS as its STAR (Student Teacher Achievement Recognition) Student for the current school year. “I was shocked when I found out,” said Purvis.

Town hall to discuss moving Big Creek polling place

Voters who use the Big Creek Fire Station as their polling place can attend an upcoming town hall meeting to learn more about the possibility of moving that polling place. The town hall will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22, in the Jury Assembly Room of the Gilmer County Courthouse.

Harrison Park barn plans talked at city council workshop

Ellijay City Councilmembers were updated on possible future improvement work to a historic barn at Harrison Park during a workshop that preceded a Jan. 24 city council meeting Linda Lancaster, of Friends of Harrison Park (FOHP), said the site’s Pinson Barn will be 100 next year.

Bushey named state’s top Young Farmer advisor

Gilmer County’s Young Farmer Advisor recently received state-level recognition. Mike Bushey was named Outstanding Advisor of the Year at the Georgia Young Farmers State Convention in Savannah.
