Fugitive found dead

A man Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office asked county residents to be on the lookout for who was wanted in North Dakota has been found dead. Willimas County, N.D., deputies responded to a call about an unattended body on Oct. 28, according to a Facebook post from the department.

Airport safety reason for land purchase

Following an hourlong closed session, Gilmer County commissioners voted to spend $175,000 to buy 2 acres of property. Land was not the goal of the purchase, but rather cutting down trees on the land which were beginning to encroach on the flight path in to the airport.

New headquarters, early start for local Toys for Tots drive

Gilmer County’s 2022 Toys for Tots campaign has officially begun. The Marine Corps Reserve campaign, which served 1,587 Gilmer children in 2021, started a little earlier than usual this year, noted Ret. U.S. Marine Sgt. AJ LeCompte, Gilmer Toys for Tots coordinator.
The Mountain Men chapter of the Protectors Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club will host a toy run for two area nonprofits Saturday, Nov. 5. A motorcycle/vehicle run taking place for the first time this Saturday will bring Christmas toys to nonprofit outreach organizations in Gilmer and Fannin County.

The karate-kicking skeleton scarecrow by United Karate Studios will be among many elaborately decorated scarecrows greeting trick or treaters at Halloween festivities planned for Harrison Park Saturday, Oct. 29. Trick or treating will be held from 1-4 p.m.

Vaping continues to be ‘daily event’

Nearly 70 vaping devices have been confiscated at Gilmer County Schools since classes began in August. The large yield can be credited to a detection system that was installed ahead of the new school year.

Subdivision road request heard by Ellijay council

Plans for a proposed subdivision on Progress Road went before a third city or county governing board as the Ellijay City Council met Monday, Oct. 17.

Ozaki going into tennis hall of fame

A Cherry Log resident whose dedication to youth sports earned him the nickname “Mr. Junior Tennis” is hall of fame bound. Bill Ozaki will soon be inducted into the Southern Tennis Hall of Fame. The honor is bestowed by the Southern Tennis Foundation and the U.S.

County’s sales ratio raised; utilities still billed at lower rate

Gilmer County will be able to collect a bigger share of public utility taxes than first anticipated after the local assessors office received a low property sales ratio from the state Department of Audits and Appeals (DOAA).
