Appalachian Road Show to perform at First Baptist Fall Festival

A Halloween homecoming is in store for an Ellijay musician who’s been traveling the country with bluegrass group Appalachian Road Show. The group, which includes Ellijay banjo player and singer Barry Abernathy, will perform at the Ellijay First Baptist Church Fall Festival Monday, Oct. 31.

Early voting starts Oct. 17

Early voting for Georgia’s upcoming general election will begin Monday, Oct. 17. Gilmer County voters will head to the voter registrar’s office at 1 Broad Street, Suite 107, to cast their votes. Early voting times are: Monday-Friday, from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m., and two Saturdays, Oct.

Strong start for Apple Festival

The 51st annual Georgia Apple Festival enjoyed a strong first weekend at the Lions Club Fairgrounds. According to the Gilmer Chamber, a total of 30,000 attended Saturday and Sunday. The festival continues this Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 15-16, at the fairgrounds.

Community trick or treat, fall events set for Harrison Park

Community trick or treating will return to downtown Ellijay’s Harrison Park the Saturday before Halloween. Trick or treaters can visit the park at 75 McCutchen Street from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29. The rain date is the next day, Sunday Oct. 30.  “We’ll open the gate at 1 p.m.

Gilmer County leaders are looking for an alternative for the two bridge replacements on Rock Creek Road. Commissioners heard about the bridges, received an update on county pool construction and discussed possible changes to the farm winery ordinance at a work session Oct. 5.

Citizens asked to be on lookout for man

Gilmer County Sheriffs Office has asked county residents to be on the lookout for a man wanted in North Dakota. “Leonard Higdon is currently being sought by law enforcement for a brutal attack that took place in Williston, N.D., on Sept. 29,” reads a post on Facebook.

Build an Ark case headed to Superior Court

A court case involving the former proprietor of a Gilmer County animal rescue and petting zoo will be heard in Superior Court. Former Build an Ark proprietor Susan Littlejohn is charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty by Gilmer County Animal Control.
