New school safety plan issued across the state

State officials are rolling out a new school safety plan that will impact how the Gilmer County School System manages threats in the future. Georgia House Speaker Jon Burns unveiled the plan last week, along with Majority Leader Chuck Efstration, Rep.

Kindness Club raises money for Gilmer Animal Shelter

Local elementary students are spreading the message that “it’s cool to be kind” and raising money for animals in need with a pet portrait fundraiser.  A display in the hall at Mountain View Elementary showcases some of the Kindness Club’s pet portraits for teachers.

East Ellijay officer resigns

An East Ellijay police officer resigned prior to the conclusion of an investigation into him being shot while off duty. East Ellijay Public Safety Director Larry Callahan made the announcement Monday morning, Feb. 10. The resignation was effective immediately. Sgt.

GCSO investigates AI child pornography case

The Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a child pornography case, where the suspect allegedly used artificial intelligence to alter images of students to be sexually explicit.

Habitat for Humanity breaks ground on new home for family

A family of four will be the homeowners of Habitat for Humanity’s (HFH) latest build in Gilmer County. With hard hats on and shovels in hand, a groundbreaking ceremony took place Saturday, at the 1-acre lot location on Roberts Ridge Road in Ellijay.

GHS STAR students, teachers announced

There was a tie this year for Gilmer High School’s STAR recipients. Two students and two teachers have been awarded the academic honor. Seniors Deacon Shull and Stephen Long earned the recognition. The tied winners were announced at Friday morning’s student meetings on campus.
