Local officials discuss HB 581

An initiative from the Georgia Legislature is giving headaches to local government officials. Gilmer County commissioners, the city councils of Ellijay and East Ellijay and the Gilmer County School Board have all published ads  scheduling public hearings on the possibility of opting out of HB 581.

911 Center in need of communication officers

The Gilmer County 911 Center is receiving more calls as the population grows, creating an urgent need to hire additional communication officers.

The humans behind Skelli-Jay

People driving along Highway 52 East in Ellijay are sure to see a giant, mummified skeleton that doesn’t just celebrate Halloween. An electric sign flashes its name, Skelli-Jay, to drivers passing by. The name was coined by community members, Tasha and Briar Green.

Winter storm closes Gilmer schools for entire week

Gilmer County students did not return to the classroom at all last week because of the winter storm. North Georgia was blanketed in snow Friday, Jan. 10, with 4 inches recorded in Ellijay.

The National Weather Service (NWS) reports a long-duration cold event could create dangerous conditions across north Georgia this week. An “extreme cold warning” was issued late Sunday night through Monday morning.

Rare storm blankets north Georgia in snow

Winter Storm Cora brought four inches of snow to Gilmer County, according to Emergency Management officials.  Friday’s snowfall impacted all of north Georgia. It was the first time more than an inch of snow has been recorded in Atlanta since 2018, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

Waking up to snow falling Friday morning was a welcomed occasion for Gilmer County residents, and highlighted the importance of community. Sherry Keith sent in this picture of her snowman.
