Ellijay native visits Rotunda to see Carter lying in state

Ellijay native Haley Higingbotham and another friend from Georgia waited three hours outdoors in subfreezing, wind-chilled temperatures last week to view the casket with President Jimmy Carter’s body lying in state in Washington, D.C.

What happens to pets if their owner loses their home?

From foreclosures to evictions, people who lose their home need to find new accommodations for their furry friends. Gilmer County Animal Shelter director Kelly Pickering says most of the time, they end up with her.  “There’s hardly the same process for each one,” Pickering said.

Sheriff’s Office warns of “brushing scam”

The Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office wants you to watch out for a scam involving deliveries at your door. It’s called a “brushing scam,” where scammers are sending people fake items like speakers or jewelry, with the goal of boosting their sales of the knock-off item.  Here’s how it works.

Sheriff’s Office warns to stay off roads

This story has been updated as of 1 p.m. All roads in Gilmer County have become “treacherous” and “impassible” from the winter storm, according to Gilmer County deputies.

Schools to close due to winter storm

This story has been updated as of 3:17 p.m.   Gilmer County schools will close their doors Friday, as a major winter storm heads our way. “We want all of our students and staff to be safe,” Gilmer County Schools Superintendent Dr. Brian Ridley said.

Chick-fil-A closing for renovations

Last call this week for Chick-fil-A fans in Gilmer County as the local restaurant closes for a lengthy renovation. “It will be a brand-new restaurant in a lot of ways,” said Gilmer County Chick-fil-A Restaurant Operator Betsy Salzmann. The store is 99 percent certain to close Thursday, Jan.

The Boys and Girls Club of North Georgia is merging, but most people won’t notice. The club serving Gilmer and Pickens counties has combined with The Boys and Girls Clubs serving Chattooga, Gordon, Murray and Whitfield counties.

Fire department merger possible

Merging the fire departments of Gilmer County and Ellijay is on the table. Just right at the edge of the table. It was mentioned at a county budget meeting Dec. 18. Gilmer County Chair Charlie Paris said he has mentioned the possibility to Ellijay Mayor Al Hoyle.
